Just got new books from Amazon
I’ve just got three new books from Amazon.
Surprisingly the shipping took 3 days and the order traveled from US to Moscow (many hundreds kilometers) faster than from Moscow to Obninsk (only one hundred kilometers).
The books are
Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl
Rapid Development by Steve McConnell
The Art of the Long View by Peter Schwartz
I’ve already started to read The Art of a Long View and suddenly understood that this book had been written 15 years ago
The Art of a Long View is mainly about how to build scenarios of the future to perceive it and make better decisions in present. Or at least to get prepared to act if something important happens, and not to have yourself or your company suddenly over the barrel. It is very similar to what Arie De Geus describes in one of the chapters of The Living Company and it’s not a surprise because Peter Schwartz worked with Arie De Geus for some time. But in my opinion Peter Schwartz describes it in more simple language.
One may say that “it is natural to think about the future” and will be absolutely right: we are as human-beings are “programmed” by the nature to think not only about nearest future but also about far future. No other animal can do that. But nevertheless there is a lot of stuff that often prevents us from believing, acting accordingly, taking right decisions, etc. I have not yet read this book to the end, but may assume that it is about the process of building scenarios and about approaches that would help one to act accordingly and make others consider the scenarios before acting. As author says, scenario building has played a big role in planning in Royal Dutch/Shell and in some other companies.
By the way, there is a chapter called “Global Teenager” and it seems to be a view from the past on todays world.
